Making a Difference at Dallas College
Share
Yesterday was a truly rewarding experience as I joined my friends from Dallas for a volunteer event that left a lasting impact. Brett, as part of the Rotary Club, had introduced us to Change 1, a non-profit organization based in Austin. Founded in 2014 by Cortney Jones, who aged out of the foster care system into homelessness, Change 1 is dedicated to supporting youth and young adults ages 15-26 as they transition from foster care into adulthood.
Change 1 focuses on two core areas: improving systems for the betterment of children, youth, and families, and providing direct support to transitioning youth by connecting them to vital community resources. Their mission is to empower foster care alumni to reclaim their lives and build the future they desire.
Our task for the day was to help pack and prepare gifts for kids and young adults aged 15 to 28. While the tasks themselves seemed straightforward, it quickly became apparent just how essential additional hands were in making the event possible. From sorting and packing to ensuring everything was ready for distribution, every small effort counted.
What made this experience even more special was the company of my pickleball friends. Volunteering together not only allowed us to bond further but also brought an element of fun and camaraderie to the day. We met wonderful people who are truly dedicated to helping others, and it was inspiring to see the positive impact they are making.
In the end, it was a fulfilling day filled with laughter, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment. Volunteering reminded us of the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together. I look forward to more opportunities to give back and to continue supporting causes that make a positive impact.
